Saddle Club

Wilder Ways Saddle Club

Our Saddle Club is a fun, active and educational after school’s activity for kids and teens in South Kintyre.  It is designed to:

  • Help to inspire and create the next generation of horse-back adventurers
  • Support young people to develop new skills that they can be proud of
  • Provide motivation and challenge
  • Be a safe space for simply having fun and letting off steam!

Join us at the Wilder Ways home base at Glen Kerran Farm, just north of Southend.  Weekly sessions will run on Mondays (P4-P7), Wednesday (P1-P3) and Thursdays (S1-S2)  from 4.30-6pm.  If your child is keen but does not fall within these classes, please get in touch as there is scope to offer additional age groups if there is demand.

Saddle Club will be split into two distinct blocks in the run up until the Easter Holidays. Starting w/c Dec 2nd, the first block will focus on how to look after a horse and give a head start for the riding block starting mid February 2020.

There are only 6 spaces available for each age group so enquire now to secure your place.  For enquires and bookings email us at admin@wilderways.scot.
What we will cover
Block 1:  Introduction to Horsemanship
Over the first 8-week winter block, your kids will learn skills and knowledge on how to handle and take care of a horse safety and effectively.  This will include:

  • Week 1 (w/c Dec 2nd) – Parts of the horse and safety - on yard and around horses
  • Week 2 (w/c Dec 9th) – Grooming your horse – why, how and with what
  • Week 3 (w/c Dec 16) – Christmas quiz and party
  • Week 4 (w/c Jan 6th) – New year, new challenge – teach your horse some new tricks
  • Week 5 (w/c Jan 13th) – Pleating and painting – doll your horse up for the catwalk
  • Week 6 (w/c Jan 20th) – How to feed your horse – and how not to poison it!
  • Week 7 (w/c Jan 27th) – Tacking up and mucking out – get dressed and tidy your room!
  • Week 8 (w/c Feb 3rd) – Showcase to Parents

On the final week of the first block, Parents will be invited to stay during the sessions so the kids can show-case everything they have learned, in a serious horse-play extravaganza finale.
Block 2:  Introduction to Riding
Starting the w/c Feb 10th the second block will introduce riding to these budding horse enthusiasts.  It will take them from the basics to as far as their adventurism will take them and we can safely support them to progress during a further 8 weeks.  The program will include:

  • Week 1 (w/c Feb 10th) – Getting on and basic controls – where is the brake and accelerator
  • Week 2 (w/c Feb 17th) – Steering your steed to safety – no crashing!
  • Week 3 (w/c Feb 24th) – Speeding up – mastering the rising trot
  • Week 4 (w/c Mar 2nd) – Stabilisers off – mini test to show us you are in control
  • Week 5 (w/c Mar 9th) – To the river we go – let’s go on an adventure
  • Week 6 (w/c Mar 16th) – A woodland trail – navigating hazards
  • Week 7 (w/c Mar 23rd) – Obstacle course in the fields
  • Week 8 (w/c Mar 30th) – Gymkhana games – let the races begin (parents welcome)

Again, on the final week, parents will be invited to see how they are getting on, as they race head to head with their favourite steed.
This brings us nicely up to the Easter holidays during which, we will be running some special events so watch this space and follow us on Facebook for your info.
