Mull of Kintyre
Glen Kerran farm is just north of Southend in the Mull of Kintyre. This is now our new home base for us and the Herd. This is a very exciting and lifelong project which we look forward to sharing with you.
Trail riding In July 2019 we first opened up our home to offer week long and short break trail riding adventure holidays around the Kintyre peninsula. This area is thick with history and surrounded by stunning beaches, grassy farms and craggy sea cliffs, with beautiful views across to the Isles of Islay, Jura, Gigha, Ailsa Craig and even Ireland. |
Home from home with a twist of luxury and without the chores
We have given the 150-year-old Glen Kerran farmhouse a Wilder Ways make-over so you can stay with us during your holiday. Spend your down time hosted by us in this traditional and quaint Scottish farmhouse. Enjoy homely creature comforts in the welcoming cosy living room and be both relaxed and inspired by the stunning views from the dining room with our menagerie just outside the window; horses, sheep, cats, dogs and chickens never far away; and the local wildlife making regular appearances. The bedrooms are all country styled. The largest double room (also available as a family room) is ensuite, with the other 3 rooms being available as doubles or twins and sharing 2 bathrooms between them, one with a shower and the other with a bath to soak any weary muscles. |
Food glorious, guilt free, food
We at Wilder Ways love food and we are passionate about environmental sustainability and self-sufficiency. We therefore aim to source our all our ingredients responsibly and as far as possible locally. Our fresh produce comes straight from our farm and other local producers within Kintyre. Most of our ‘dry stores’ come from Greencity, a Glasgow based company trading in ethically sourced quality produce and championing co-operative working. During your stay with us you will therefore be treated to some local gastronomic delights and wholesome home cooking, with the best twists of Scottish cuisine and hospitality. And you can do all of this guilt free, knowing your food has low mileage, your meat is free range and pre-loved, and you can even help pick your own veg and collect the eggs! |

Description
A week-long ride, exploring the stunning landscape of this most south-westerly point of Scotland. Kintyre is the ancient home of the Kings of Dalriada and the area is steeped in Scottish history from standing stones that predate Stonehenge to the Campbeltown Picture House, the smallest and oldest cinema in Scotland. The landscape you’ll be riding across is hilly, with wide open beaches, rocky crags and magical views out to Ireland and the Isle of Islay. At night you’ll be staying with us at Glen Kerran Farm, a 150 year-old- traditional stone Scottish farmhouse in a secluded glen only two miles from the tip of the peninsula. You will sleep overnight in a comfortable bedroom within the farmhouse and eat in the glass-room, over-looking the tranquil Kerran Glen. Here, you will have a different breakfast special cooked every morning and each night we will feast together on local, home-cooked, hearty and delicious food. |
After breakfast you will go out to the stables to help brush and tack-up your horse – we will give you as much help as you need. This is a great time for bonding with your horse and chatting all things horsemanship and generally enjoying the banter of your hosts and camaraderie of the group.
This ride is part point to point and partially ridden from base but never riding the same route twice. Some nights we will leave the horses in a field out on the trail, but we humans will return to the farm and our creature comforts each night. You will not have to pack and move your own stuff, just take with you the minimum that you need each day: e.g. rain-clothes and a camera. We will carry food, drinks, midge repellent and sunscreen.
The Ride
Day 1: Arrive
You will arrive at Glen Kerran Farm to meet Cara, Nikki and the Herd, settle into your room and have a quick tour of the stables, before sitting down to a delicious meal with the rest of the group. After dinner we will run through the itinerary and talk though general housekeeping so that we can get going in the morning.

Day 2: Glen Kerran Farm to the west (~15km) After a relaxing breakfast we’ll introduce you to your steed and head off out on the trail, riding out of our farm. This day is designed to let you get to know your horse over different terrain and paces as we ride through the forests and rivers of our ‘back yard’. From here we will head to the north west towards the hills where the horses will stay the night at a local farm. |
Day 3: The Hills (~20km)
This is the day for steep climbs, navigations skills and big views. A whole day spent in the hills to test the bond between you and your steed over wide open landscapes. We will learn how to navigate by the plants under our hooves and will picnic by hill lochs. A demanding day for horse and rider but within the kind of natural space that just makes your heart sing. We will end this day with the horses staying out near the coast. Day 4: Beach and more beach (~10km) Today is your ‘sea salt spa’ or at least the wind in your face and the sand in your hair. We spend an entire day on the beach with stunning views out to the Inner Hebrides. We will ride beautiful beaches, play on the sand dunes and enjoy the surf and a bit of speed. If the weather and tides allow, we will even enjoy a wee swim with the horses. Again, the horses stay out on the trail this night. |
Day 5. Rest Day
You can spend today putting your feet up at the farm or exploring the local area. Kintyre is the ancient seat of the Scottish Kings and the hills around us are steeped in history, from standing stones and cairns to the eccentric painting of Jesus that appeared one day in the cave south of Campbeltown over 100 years ago. You can do a tour of one of the Campbeltown distilleries, Springbank, Glengyle or try the brand-new Glen Scotia malt. Alternatively take a boat trip from Campbeltown or hire a bike to see the area from a different kind of saddle.
Day 6. Coastal Cliffs (~20km)
Feeling refreshed, we kick off with another big day through the hills and along the sea cliffs where we will enjoy epic sparkling views over the Atlantic. We ride through a nature reserve and will be spotting for wildlife and sea birds along the way. This day will see us bring the herd back home to their own field for the night.
Day 7. Finale ride (~10m)
Our last ride is closer to home and is the ‘warm and fuzzy’ day to play with your horse. We start the morning with some natural horsemanship games and then head out to ride our own ground and a neighbouring farm, playing in the rivers and enjoying a good gallop to finish.
Day 8.
After a last breakfast all together you will say goodbye to your beloved steed (and us) and head home. We hope to see you again next year!
This itinerary is an example – exact routes may change due to weather, tides or other factors.
We encourage you to get your ‘hands dirty’ and to look after your horse for the week as if it were your own. Don’t worry, we will support you to do this.

Yoga special
We all know how tough riding can be on your body. The notion, 'how hard can it be you just sit there', is utterly ludicrous. The truth is it doesn't matter if you are new to riding; returning to riding and a bit rusty; or daily riders like us clocking up over 500 hours in the saddle each year...riding is a very demanding sport and riders are athletes. We have met many different fitness enthusiasts and experts among our Wilder Ways clients over the years and therefore it was only a matter of time before something exciting emerged. We are overjoyed to be embarking on a new partnership with one such client, enabling us to offer our first ever Yoga and riding products. We are therefore delighted to announce that this summer we will be offering a taster series, which will include daily yoga sessions as part of our regular short breaks. This will happen on just two specific holidays on the following dates.
Marieke, Yoga on Tay
About me: My passion is being in the outdoors - hillwalking, camping, climbing, sea kayaking, skiing, swimming and, whenever I get the opportunity, on horseback. Having learnt to ride as a child in the Netherlands, I never got to experience the exhilaration of long canters up the hill or along the beach until I came back to riding in my forties, in Scotland. I now live in North-East Fife, where I run a yoga studio with my partner and work as a non-executive director in the public sector. I have completed my training as an Iyengar teacher and really look forward to sharing the many benefits of yoga with other riders.
