Would you like to spend MORE time with us and get to know what goes on behind the scenes? Fancy a twist of hard graft, an overdose of fresh air, a splash of new skills and a heap of fun with other like-minded folks?  Why not join our volunteer programme? It runs year-round and we have opportunities for riders and non-riders alike.

Your work might include:
  • Helping with horse care, grooming and tacking up for rides
  • Mucking out and cleaning the yard
  • Horse welfare – helping with basic first aid, massaging and physio exercises, and assisting other welfare professionals
  • Horse training (groundwork, schooling, trekking to get horses fit)
  • Riding and help with rides (depending on experience and ability)
And/Or
  • Gardening (digging, planting, weeding, harvesting, mowing, strimming and processing what we’ve grown)
  • Woodland management (helping to plant trees across the farm, felling & processing firewood)
  • Animal care (helping us feed and care for our sheep, pigs, chickens, cats and dogs)
  • Farm maintenance (fencing and building repairs, track maintenance)
  • House maintenance (painting, furniture repairs, deep cleaning)
  • Helping with guests and light housework
Thereis never a dull moment on the farm and lots of variety. We are always keen to teach you new skills along the way such as making the butter, fixing the arrows or improving your horsemanship.

We prefer volunteers to come for between 3 and 4 weeks, though if you’ve been before we may take you for a longer stay.  We do not offer volunteer placements for less than 2 weeks. We ask you to work for five days per week, about 9-5 (though this can vary depending on what we’re getting up to each day) and we make sure you get two full days off to rest and explore the area.

You will sleep in the farmhouse in one of our 2 volunteer bedrooms – you may have to share with one other person.  We will give you an allowance for shopping each week so you can have the things you like.  When we have riding holidays guests your evening meal will be prepared by our chef.  The rest of the time you will cook for yourself. Please let us know any dietary requirements or preferences you may have.
So what are you waiting for?  If this is you, download the form at the top of the page, fill it in and send it to us with a cover letter saying when you want to come and why you’d be the best volunteer we’ve ever had!

In 2025 we will not be accepting any volunteers for November and December.

We are also listed as hosts for volunteers through the WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) website https://wwoof.org.uk/en/host/57299-remote-smallholding-and-horse-riding-adventures-in-west-scotland

Or, if you've stayed with us before and want to get involved in all things horse with us on our side of the fence, check out our Wilder Working Week Holidays which has multiple dates through March to May.

You can find reviews from our previous volunteers below, and read all about one of our previous volunteer Tabby's experience at Wilder Ways here.
"I came for two weeks in April 2025. I was with two other German volunteers. The woofer feeds the animals every morning, helps with construction work, gardening, and cleaning the guests' rooms once a week. I didn't know how to ride a horse, so I helped feed and brush them. Cara and Nikki allowed me to go on a horseback ride and learn. I really had a wonderful experience and met some wonderful people! Thank you again for everything!" - Aurore, May 2025
"If you are looking for a paradise on earth you just found it ! Nikki and Cara are one of the most amazing women you can meet. Not only for they kindness, generosity and humor but for everything they have to teach you. This three weeks I've just spend were kind of magic... The conversations, the horses, the landscape, the food, the work, all this details that make a place special. I would say thank you for everything but the best compliment I can give you is not telling you thanks because you've just ruined all the next woofing to come for me. See you again very soon for some scones and roasted hazelnuts, wish you all the best until then. Kiss Una for me..." - Lucile, April 2025
"I had the time of my life volunteering at Wilderways. Nikki and Cara are as kind and welcoming as they come. The food was fresh and delicious, and the location was absolutely stunning surrounded by miles of rolling hills, woodlands, and plenty of lovely animals, including horses, dogs, chickens, and cats. The work was always clearly laid out with a rota, so we knew exactly what we were doing each day. I learned so much during my time there and couldn’t recommend Wilderways enough. Thank you for such a memorable and rewarding experience!" - Isaac, April 2025
"We had such an amazing time working with Nikki and Cara at Wilder Ways! They were super welcoming and made the whole experience feel like home. We loved spending time with the animals (the horses were total sweethearts), and getting to help out with the gardening and learn more about sustainability was really cool and eye-opening.
One of the highlights for us was definitely the archery activities—so much fun and way more addictive than we expected!
Overall, it was such a great vibe—peaceful, playful, and full of good energy. Huge thanks to Nikki and Cara for being such awesome humans and letting us be a part of it all. We already miss it!" - Lilah, June 2025
