Horsemanship is certainly not a new phenomenon, with several ancient civilizations claiming to be the godfather. Regardless of who was first, it is great to see so many people more consciously challenging how they work with horses today. As we say at home, “do your best until you know better, then do better” (see 'for MY love of play' blog). Within this, the key might indeed be the ‘YOU’. In order to be an accomplished horseman, we believe you must first be an authentic, emotionally gymnastic and self-aware human.
Horsemanship is much more than rope and stick techniques and reading horse behaviour. These tangible aspects might be essential to the accessibility of horsemanship, but let’s delve a little deeper into the hearts and minds of both horse & human.
As a species, horses are already inherently authentic, emotionally gymnastic and self-aware, making them fantastic teachers. We also believe our herd are happier and healthier as a result of the parts they have played in humanship journeys. Both aspects demonstrate a powerful and meaningful feedback loop between our two species.
When we (Cara & Nikki) founded Wilder Ways nearly 10 years ago, our aim was simply to take people on great adventures with horses through the Scottish wilderness. We never imagined just how beautiful and profound some of those journeys would become – both for horses and humans alike – and feel privileged to have been facilitators of this (see some beautiful testimonials from our guests here).
With horses as our teachers and the wilderness as our classroom, Wilder Ways is a powerful and safe space to inspire and support growth, to nurture and empower. Therefore, in 2026 we cannot wait to focus some of our adventures wholeheartedly on horsemanship-humanship journeys. We are so excited to launch our new short break The Haven as well as day session opportunities through our Empowerment Studio.
These experiences will include lots of time in nature, with the farm animals and the whole herd as well as interaction with individual horses and space with yourself. Let us worry about the what, where and when: - all tailored to what is right for your individual journey. You just need to cast yourself adrift on the current, be present and embrace your vulnerability. In return, we promise you a transformative experience that will impact you far beyond this adventure.
Also, under this Horsemanship-Humanship umbrella we are delighted to continue our collaboration with Aerrea and host Clinics with guest practitioners.
